Russell, your LI etiquette observation is right on. While I am a casual reader of your Business of Sports blog, I do grab helpful insights each time I check in. Even with associates I DO know, I take the time to communicate in my LI requests why I am reaching out to connect. I would not waste your time with anything less than a helpful introduction...

I think when I first started using LI I made that mistake. Until I fine tuned my professional career and learned to maximize everything things started to change.

I also think when people pitch you something and don't even know you, haven't read anything in your profile, really ticks me off as well. IF I am an INTERN I am obviously not a decision maker. So don't pitch me anything about outsourcing to India especially if I live in MI. THINK FIRST.

Russell-I too, get this on my linked in page and I often marvel at the randomness of the requests.

Same on facebook. I am guilty of not having the courtesy to change the standard "I'd like to to invite you to join my network" if I already know that person from another social circle.

When you don't bother to introduce yourself prior to an invitation, it's like sending a resume without a cover letter. Only worse.
